Will I require a special driver's license to operate a motorhome?

The State of California allows you to operate a motorhome with your class C license as long as the overall length is less than 40 feet.

Once you go over 40 feet, your motorhome is classed as over-length. The operator of an over-length motorhome - that is one that is longer than 40 feet, but no more than 45 feet requires a motorhome endorsement on a non-commercial class B driver license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Drivers must pass a written and skills examination (driver's test), submit a specified medical form, & pay a $34 fee. A booklet (Recreational Vehicles & Trailers (DL-648) is available online.

Out of state drivers visiting California may not operate an over-length motorhome unless in possession of an out of state driver license authorizing the operation of that vehicle.

Further information may be obtained from the DMV at 1-800-777-0133
